In May we will be having a field day and cookout rather than a meeting at the Agri-Civic Center.

Our field day will be on Saturday May 11th, 2013.  We will begin by meeting at Bill Smith’s home on Hwy 52 South at 8:00 a.m. From there we will go inspect and learn about other member’s beehives.

Our state bee inspector, Nancy Ruppert, will be performing the inspections. If you would like to have your beehives inspected please let Bill Smith, RC Furr, or myself know as soon as possible.

Then about 2:00 p.m. we will meet at Hipo’s Haven Campground, 24076 Saint Martin Road 704-982-5081 (directions) (map) for a cookout.

All Stanly County Beekeeper members and their families are invited to the cookout regardless of whether they participated in the field day or not. We will be having hamburgers, hotdogs, and the fixin’s.

Please bring a dessert if you like. If you will be attending the cookout please let me know by email or phone so we can plan accordingly.

Phone: 980-875-0672

If you signed up to have your beehives inspected or to attend the cookout at the April meeting, then you do not need to respond to this notice unless there has been a change.

We hope to see everyone at the field day/cook out.

Thanks,

Bill Houck

Ellis Hardison spoke about swarms at last night’s Stanly County Beekeeping Association’s (SCBA) March meeting at the Agri-Civic Center in Albemarle, NC.

SCBA March Meeting

Ellis Hardison shared many of his experiences in collecting swarms; he began working with bees with his grandfather at age five.

Ellis Hardison described how cultures from different continents collected swarms as well as how they replaced their queens.

While grazing on the web this morning I found another blog that talks about saving bees. Growing A Greener World has a video that takes you from setting up a hive to enjoying a local honey-based meal. Check it out.

You might want to check out the whole site: http://www.growingagreenerworld.com for complete gardening coverage.

I’ll be reading it frequently now that I’ve found it.

If anyone needs compost, please let me know. Poop Mountain has aged over five years and offers some of the best, gentle compost in the area.

Enjoy,
